Brave New Law

The Brave New Law project aims to hold conferences that allow students an opportunity to inquire about the direction of legislative and judicial responses to the application of biotechnology. In pursuit of this goal, experts are invited to present and debate about choices and decisions surrounding biotechnology.

Human Reproduction and Biotechnology (2004): The application of biotechnology to human reproduction, our first conference topic, amply satisfies both the letter and spirit of the Brave New Law project as the direction of policy in the area appears unsettled and the plethora of philosophical, religious, ethical, and legal quagmires surrounding human reproduction make any attempts at novel legislation brave indeed. The conference will center on a chance to discuss and debate with leading experts. Not coincidentally, the conference will be held the day after the "Unnatural Selection" conference sponsored by Stanford's new Center for Law and the Biosciences. We are delighted that experts from that conference will be joining us, along with representatives from the President's Council on Bioethics and from the field of biomedical ethics.

Funding: Stanford BioLaw is grateful to the law firm of Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP for their generous support of the conference.
